- 皆さん、これからバイリングアルでの英語の勉強をスタートしましょう！
- 初めが大切なので、ここで大事なことをお話しします。
- １．正しい発音を覚える。
- ２．言葉は最低１５回は読んで（発音して）又、ノーとに書いて覚えましょう！
- ３．英語はそのまま覚えて日本語に直さない習慣をつけましょう！
- ４．英語の辞書は、英英辞典、お勧めは Oxford
のWordpower, 全ての単語に発音が入って いて、又一度パソコンにインストールすれば、インターネット上で何時も開かれているので、辞書不要！大変便利！
- ５．毎日少しでも（たとえ５－１0分）英語に触れる習慣をつけましょう。
- ６．今回は Reading の練習です。Reading
には精読と速読があります。今回の
The Summing Up は内容が大変難しいので、精読が良いでしょう。小説類のOf
Human Bondage は、速読で練習してください。

- さて、皆さん Reading とは何か？ また、何が文章を理解するのに大切かを、初めにご説明しましょう。要
- するに、文章を理解するに大切なのは、その文章がどのような構成に（主語、動詞、補語、目的語、等）
- なっているかを先ず知る事です。
- 前の頁の一部をどうしたら（？）文章が正しく理解できるのでしょうか？The
Summing Up は、随筆なので、
- Spoken English ではなく、殆どが
Written English ( formal) な、英語です。Of
Human Bondage は
- 小説なので、Written English とSpoken
English が混在しています。英語の勉強には最も適した読み物が
- 小説と言えましょう。ちょっとここで、筆者の考えを紹介します。
- This（主語） is（動詞） a
very long novel (補語）, and(接続詞）
I（主語）am ashamed (動詞＝慣用語）
to make（不定詞） it longer by writing a
preface to it. （副詞句）
- An author(主語） is（動詞）
probably(副詞） the last person (補語）(
who（関係代名詞） can write
fitly of his own work.＝関係代名詞以降全体が形容詞節)
In this connexion ( connection)＝副詞句, an instructive story（主語）
is told（動詞、受動態）
by Roger Martin du Gard, a distinguished French novelist（同格名詞）, about
Marcel Proust.
- １．上の様に長い文章は、コンマ （
, )を入れると、文章がわかりやすくなる。
- ２．分詞構文は、関係代名詞に置き換えてみる、と意味がわかり易い。
- ３．形容詞句（分詞構文など）や関係代名詞節は括弧 （ ）でくくると、はっきりする事が多い。
- ４．後は、言葉の分からないのは、辞書を見れば理解できる。
- どんなに長い文章も、上の様に、コンマを入れたり、又、分詞構文は関係代名詞で置き換えたり、又は関
- 係代名詞を括弧でくくったりすれば、文章全体像が見えてくる。

の代表作 Of Human Bondage と
- The Summing Upの一部を勉強 しよう。

- この文章は大変長い文章で、どの様に文章が繋がっているか？が、難しいと思われます。初めに筆者が
- 皆さんにアドバイスを与えていますが、上の様に文章を括弧で区切ったり、又コンマを挿入すると文全体
- の構成が分かります。ここで、新たな規則、を少し勉強しておきましょう。それは、同格(apposition)
とゆう
- もので、
- Our teacher, Henry Evans,
complied the dictionary. We, Japanese, live on rice.
- （この二つの名詞が同格といって、説明を加えている。又、
- He heard the news that his team had won the game.（ここでは、the
news と that 以下の節が同格

Noun clauses as objects of verbs “（同格）
と呼ばれています。このような動詞は結構沢山ありますので、皆さんを辞書を見て、例文を参考に勉強して下さい。
- 例を少し挙げれば、
- She said ( that) the story was true.
- It’s possible (that)
he has not received the letter.
- You must admit that it all
sounds very strange.
- She asked that she should
be kept informed. など。that 節を取る動詞は；
- admit, advise, agree, appear, arrange, ask, beg, believe, demand, doubt,
expect, fear,
- feel, find ( wh) , forget
(wh), happen, hope, imagine, learn, order, promise, realize (wh),
- recognize, recommend, remember ( wh), request, remind, say ( wh), see (
wh), seem, show (wh),
- suppose, suspect, teach, tell ( wh), think (wh), turn out, understand
(wh), urge, wish, wonder(wh),
- 等、等。
- note: Verbs marked ( wh) can also be followed by noun clauses beginning
with wh-words:

- ８頁の最初の文章は、少々難しいですね！ちょっと、この長い文章を分かり易くする為に、直して見ましょう。
